Once a bad fashion statement, fringe is totally back in! Of course, it helps we’ve moved away from former limitations to the cowgirl-aesthetic, available in only leather or suede, and added some soft, modern touches like this beautiful fringe knit open sweater from American Eagle Outfitters for $49.99.
Contrary to popular belief, fringe doesn’t have to be relegated to music festivals or sloppy weekend hangouts. Such a classic piece can be styled up or down, depending on the occasion. I used it to create the following looks, one of which has clean but laid-back weekend appeal, and the other appropriate to a night out with gals or a favorite guy.
Fringe Is In And Out During The Day
My day look relies on boyfriend jeans and a graphic tee. Printed tees are making a big statement these days, and are a perfect addition to your fashion repertoire. Much like fringe, they have evolved beyond the rock show, camping and painting your living room, and now fit a wide variety of situations. Here, it adds bold color and striking imagery, providing a focal point for the outfit. It is framed by the classic fringe sweater, which ties the whole thing together.
Also note the jeans. Since the denim world is now trending toward the oversized and slouchy, these work perfectly for a casual weekend outing. When you add tousled curls, metallic nails, red lips and a nice bag, it cleans up real nice. Throw some assorted bracelets and a few rings on top and you’re good to go.
Fringe Is In And Out For The Night
I wanted to dress the opposite part for a night out. In this case, the fringe tones down an otherwise professional-looking ensemble with its elegant drape and blurred lines. Underneath I’m wearing dressy pants, a statement necklace and a white button up for slightly prim charm, without being uptight or overdone.
Add some jewelry and an oversized clutch, as well as hair and makeup, and you have the perfect look for girls’ night, date night, or happy hour. Whether you’re going to a show or just eating too many onion rings at a fancy bar, this look does the trick. The best part? You can transition from an office outfit to this just by slipping on the beautiful cardigan.
So what do you think? Have I changed your mind about fringe? If you’re like me, you’ll soon regard it as indispensable.
