I’m generally not one to decorate for the holidays. On occasion I’ll go all-out for a party or because family are in town, but in the past 10 years I can count on one hand how many times I’ve done that. However this year, that’s all going to change. I have a son now and I want him to enjoy the holidays as much as I did as a kid, which means I have a newfound interest in all things holiday.

I started with Halloween and a black and white Dia De Los Muertos theme, and now I’m moving onto Christmas. But with a kid I also have a new sense of budgeting – do you know how many diapers I could buy for that ornament and how many ornaments you actually need to cover a decent sized tree? I love the idea of mixing in a few child-specific pieces into my more minimalist grown-up decorating scheme. Also, if you’re into planning ahead, their Halloween costumes are a steal right now, and I’m seriously considering forcing my kid to be a baby sea turtle next year.
